What does an Osteopath do?
-
Osteopaths offer hands-on treatment for a range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation and articulation are some of the hands-on techniques that we use. We also offer advice on lifestyle management such as ergonomics, and prescribe exercises to help you manage your condition.
-
Do osteopaths manipulate?
- The term manipulation can be used loosely for a variety of treatment techniques. Manipulate may mean the use of soft tissue techniques, joint articulation of stretching. Manipulate may also be exclusively used for “cracking”. It is important to let your osteopath know what techniques you are comfortable with.
-
How do osteopaths treat?
-
Osteopaths treat holistically and are “hands-on” with their approach. We view the whole body as inter-related and connected.
Many osteopaths use a combination of soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation and joint articulation. Some osteopaths manipulate or “crack” areas and others also offer dry needling services.
We welcome your feedback on techniques used and aim to make sure you feel comfortable with the treatment process in its entirety.
-
How does osteopathy help babies?
-
Osteopathy may help with the musculoskeletal elements contributing to breastfeeding issues. Sometimes the birth process may be physically traumatic for the baby which can place strain on certain areas of the baby eg neck, shoulders, jaw.
If you have concerns about your child’s movement or motor development an osteopath may help identify and treat the involved muscles or joints.
-
What’s involved in treatment for my child?
-
Like adults, a comprehensive history is taken to ensure that we understand the presenting complaint. Often treatment takes place when the baby is feeding, lying down, seated on mum’s lap or resting over mums shoulder. We like children to feel relaxed during our sessions so quiet toys and books are welcomed.
-
Does treatment hurt or will I be sore afterwards?
- It is never our intention to hurt you during treatment. Depending on your symptoms and severity, there may be some pain or discomfort during assessment and treatment as we take care to be thorough and accurate in providing care for you.
- Sometimes soreness after treatment is noticed. This is more common at the beginning of a course of treatment and should subside in a day or two. (Sometimes it’s likened to soreness felt after a new exercise or more intense activity has been performed). Our osteopaths will take time to provide you with self-management strategies to manage this time between treatments and minimise any soreness.
-
Can I be treated whilst pregnant?
- Many patients find osteopathic treatment during pregnancy to be very helpful as their body undergoes pretty magnificent change. Common ailments we treat include back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica and other musculoskeletal complaints. Your osteopath will work with you to keep you comfortable and relaxed during your session and may offer you extra pillows if lying down, or provide treatment whilst you’re sitting. If you have any medical concerns pertaining to your pregnancy, your osteopath will refer you back to your doctor or midwife for review.
-
I’m really sick, should I keep my appointment?
